Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, and John Dillinger were prominent gangsters in the 1920s.
During the 1920's, organized crime was quite large due to the economic depression and the ban on alcoholic beverages and that was bad
Organized crime was more prominent in this era because it was an easy way to make money in a time when money was very valued and hard to come across.
Gangsters used alcohol distribution as a major income source, since it could not be sold in stores legally due to the ban.
Alcohol distribution was only stopped by about 5% of the alcohol that was being distributed.
Bribing officials was also very prominent in this era.
During the 1920's, gangsters, mafia, gangs, etc could sell illegal alcohol, they also got lots of money.
The Mafia is a criminal organization, also known as a "family", and mafias can be in any city, from the smallest city to New York.
Each started off as a group of immigrants.
The "Mafia"," is also known as La Cosa Nostra, which means "Our thing"
Another name for the Mafia is "The Mob".
The Name, "Mafia," was originated from an association of Sicilians.
This group offered "protection" from other gangs and thugs, in exchange for extorted money.
Mafia groups often had a leader, called a "Mob boss."
Mafia crested in the mid 1920's, during the time period of prohibition, when the mafia groups could profit from distributing alcohol to people.
A member in a mafia is called a "mafioso," or "man of honor."
Since the 1920's, the mafia has influenced it's way into many movies and even American culture.
The term "mafia" has even been generalized to any group involved in racketeering, such as the Russian Mafia or the Japanese Yakuza, even though "mafia" refers to th
e Sicilian/American crime families.
